Sampai saat ini, sebenarnya format buku yang masih menjadi favorit saya adalah dalam bentuk fisik. Buku-buku dalam bentuk fisik sangat mudah digunakan dan dibaca. Berpindah dari satu halaman ke halaman lain serta menandai halaman atau teks yang penting. Selain itu, buku dalam bentuk fisik lebih ‘indah’ untuk dikoleksi.

Namun begitu, akhir-akhir ini, ketika teknologi dan informasi semakin berkembang dengan pesat, muncullah format buku berbentuk digital, yang dikenal sebagai ebook (pdf, epub, mobi dan sebagainya). Tentu saja format baru ini kemudian menjadi populer karena memiliki beragam keuntungan dibanding buku-buku ‘tradisional’, yaitu buku dalam bentuk fisik.

Ebook dianggap lebih praktis dan sederhana. Selain itu ada beberapa keuntungan dan kelebihan lain dari ebook, diantaranya:

1.   Buku dalam bentuk fisik kadang dianggap merepotkan untuk dibawa bepergian. Seseorang memerlukan tas dan beban yang lebih berat bila ingin membawa beberapa buku sekaligus, begitu pula bila semakin banyak buku yang dimiliki, semakin luas pula ruang yang dibutuhkan untuk meletakkan buku-buku dalam bentuk fisik tersebut. Sedangkan untuk ebook, yang diperlukan hanyalah ‘ruang memori digital’, yaitu di dalam hard disk, memori komputer atau tablet. Seseorang dapat membawa ebook kemanapun dan sebanyak apapun tanpa merasa kerepotan atau keberatan.

2.   Bagi pengguna tablet, ebook sangat menguntungkan, karena selain praktis, membaca ebook hampir sama selayaknya membaca buku-buku dalam format fisik.

3.   Keuntungan lain yang menurut saya cukup signifikan, adalah mengenai masalah koleksi. Dalam kasus ini, saya kerap merasakan serta mengalami baik secara pribadi maupun memantau kasus orang-orang yang saya kenal, bahwasanya ketika berhadapan dengan beragam tugas kampus, makalah, skripsi, serta tulisan-tulisan ilmiah lainnya, kebutuhan akan sumber dan rujukan untuk tulisan-tulisan ilmiah tersebut. Tidak jarang mahasiswa atau penulis kesulitan untuk mendapatkan buku-buku teori sebagai pendukung tulisan mereka. Tidak semua buku teori dengan gampang di dapatkan di toko-toko buku, apalagi di luar pulau Jawa, kesulitan mencari buku-buku tersebut sangat dirasakan. Jalan lain adalah dengan merujuk ke perpustakaan daerah atau perpustakaan kampus yang kemudian akan dihadapkan dengan permasalahan lain, semacam administrasi dan sebagainya. Dengan ebook, beragam judul, tema dan jenis sangat beragam bisa didapatkan dalam jumlah yang hampir tidak terbatas.

Meskipun begitu, ebook juga memiliki beragam kelemahannya sendiri. Misalnya, rata-rata ebook yang didapatkan di internet berbahasa Inggris, tentu saja menyulitkan bagi orang yang menginginkan buku-buku dengan teks berbahasa Indonesia. selain itu, tidak semua judul dan jenis buku bisa kita dapatkan di Internet. Kadang memerlukan pencarian yang cukup panjang atau berakhir dengan cara membeli dengan harga yang kadang menyaingi (bahkan bisa lebih mahal) buku dalam bentuk fisik.

Oleh sebab itu, saya secara pribadi ingin berbagi koleksi-koleksi ebook yang sudah saya koleksi cukup lama. Tidak jarang ebook yang saya dapatkan memerlukan waktu yang cukup panjang dan usaha yang tidak mudah. Tujuan saya adalah untuk membantu siapapun yang memerlukan ebook untuk keperluan apapun. Ini didasarkan pada pengalaman saya sebagai seorang dosen, mahasiswa, penulis, pembimbing skripsi dan Tugas Akhir, serta pecinta buku, ketika mengalami kesulitan dalam mendapatkan buku-buku sumber sebagai landasan teori atau ketika memiliki keinginan yang sangat besar untuk membaca beragam karya sastra atau pengetahuan mengenai sejarah, agama, filsafat, atau pengetahuan-pengetahuan lainnya.
